Dry Rot or Wet Rot? The morphology of the fungus together with the conditions of growth and the appearance of the decayed wood were all assessed and it was found that the Wet Rot Fibroporia vaillantii was present.   In response to a householders concern over a 'mushroomy' smell investigations revealed that an attack of Dry Rot (Serpula lacrymans) was taking place. Note the split skirting and the fresh white fruiting body at its base.
