Case Histories - A Hidden Damp Secret

The client was complaining of a damp smell and dampness at the base of a cupboard in a ground floor reception room. The initial moisture tests from the cupboard were puzzling, a contractor had allowed for waterproofing the entire flank wall as a remedy.   When the carpet was lifted back investigation with a Radio Frequency Protimeter suggested that water was present beneath the suspended floor and a decision was made to lift floorboards.

Primary mould growths were noted to the exposed timber surfaces indicating high humidity.   The source of the moisture was found-: a leaking water main had saturated the oversite and the adjacent flooring timbers. After repair of the leak a specification was given to dry out the damp timbers to minimise the risk of serious timber decay.
