Case Histories - Bathroom Madness

The client had formed a bathroom from an under pavement vault with an extensive cavity membrane system provided by a contractor. The room had a permanent smell of dampness. The image shows the sump chamber.   The sump cover was removed and the sump inspected. It was noted that above the drainage membrane the screed was wet.

Investigation revealed the composition of the water-proof membrane which appeared to be of two types. Significantly the drainage gap was dry.   Further investigation revealed that the screed under the suspended floor was saturated and water was not draining away. To compound the problems all the timber noggins were resting without protection directly upon the wet screed and absorbing water enabling decay. Swift remedial action was specified to resolve the problem.
