Services - Penetrating Dampness

The householder was perplexed as to where this dampness was coming from (suspected rising dampness) the cause was traced to the adjacent down pipe, subsequently repaired allowing the plaster to dry out.   After repainting works to this light well the paint began to blister and discolour. After investigations it was noted that the exterior brickwork pointing was in poor condition allowing water ingress.
Need help and advice?
In this first floor bedroom damp patches appeared after redecoration. External observation revealed that the brickwork was both porous and badly pointed. Re-pointing and the application of a proprietary water repellent resolved the problem.   At first glance this may seem to be rising dampness? Being a first floor flat this was unlikely! External observation revealed a defective porch detail and cracked external render allowing water penetration.
